EDITORIAL POLICY

French Studies in Southern Africa is intended to provide a forum for the discussion of questions pertaining to the French language, literature, and linguistics of France and Francophone countries, as well as the teaching of French as a foreign language. Reviews are limited to books published by members of the Association.
All contributions will be critically evaluated by the Editorial Board. Copyright on all published material is vested in the Association, whose permission must be sought for the reprinting of articles. Articles already published elsewhere should not be submitted to French Studies in Southern Africa without the permission of both the Editorial Board and the holder of the copyright of the article concerned. The Editor reserves the right to amend the phrasing and punctuation of any article if deemed necessary.

SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Articles that do not conform to the following requirements will not be considered.
Manuscripts in French (or, in special cases, in English), must first be submitted electronically. Once it has been approved by the editor, the proposed article must be submitted in duplicate, and it will besent it to members of the editorial advisory board. On acceptance, a electronic version in Microsoft Office Word will be requested. The typing must be double-spaced, with ample margin. There should not be more than 32 lines per page. Without the Editor's prior consent, contributions should not exceed 25 pages in the above-mentioned style, including notes and references. The first page must contain the name and full address of the contributor, his/her university and the title of the article in normal sentence case (neither underlined nor all in capital letters), an abstract in French or English (whichever is not the language of the article), followed by at least five key words in French and English.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS

The MLA handbook for style is followed except for the system of references, which is a slightly modified version of the “author / date” method. References to sources thus appear in the text (not in notes) and are indicated by the surname(s) of the author(s), the year of publication and the page number, for example (Genette 1994: 24). When single literary works are quoted from repeatedly, the work’s title accompanied by the page number(s) or act/scene numbers are sufficient. Example: (Phèdre, III, 3.)
A list of all titles used should appear at the end of the article (after the notes, which are always endnotes), under the caption Références. The sources must be arranged alphabetically according to the authors’ surnames. If one author’s name is followed by several titles, the latter are arranged in chronological order. If the author has two or more works with the same date, a lower-case a, b etc. should be added (e.g. Salazar 1993a: 22).
Only titles of books and reviews should be italicised. Titles of individual articles are not italicised, and should not be placed within inverted commas in the list of references.

EXAMPLE (note punctuation):

Références
Genette, Gérard. 1972. Le discours du récit. Figures III. Paris: Seuil. Collection Poétique.
— 1994. L'Œuvre de l'art. Immanence et transcendance. Paris: Seuil. Collection Poétique.
Shackleton, Mitchell. 1984. Silence et aveu dans Phèdre. French Studies in Southern Africa. 13: 15-26.

Quotes longer than 34 words should be indented on both sides and do not have quotation marks.

Notes are used only for information outside the main line of thought. The corresponding numbers are affixed as superscripts, without parentheses, before the punctuation marks. The notes themselves should appear at the end of the article, before the references, under the caption Notes.

Offprints: On publication, contributors will receive one complimentary copy of the journal and ten complimentary offprints of their article.
